[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for The Last of Us Season 2, Episodes 1-6.]

The last of us Season 2 finally answered one of the biggest questions in the last episode “The Price”, in which the audience finally learned when and why Joel (Pedro Pascal) Eugene (Joe Pantoliano), the husband of Jackson's resident therapist Gail (Catherine O'Hara).

As the spectators will remember, Joel visited at the opener of the second season at a therapy session with Gail – a figure created for the series – to discuss his tense relationship with Ellie when the professional fought her own anger against her patient. At the time, Gail had told Joel that she celebrated her birthday without her husband Eugene for the first time in 41 years.

She said Joel that she was angry with him because he had killed her husband and later commented on the season that Joel had shot the man without a choice.

After the debut of Episode 1, Neil Druckmann said: “The idea of Gail when this therapist came before we return to Eugene gang … Eugene is this character that we feel his presence, but he is already dead when we hear about him in the video game.

HBO

Similar to the game in a sense, Eugene was dead when the second season took up, but episode 6 flashed back to his tragic end. It turned out that Eugene was bitten outside of Jackson's borders, and during a patrol, Ellie and Joel encountered the man who wanted to commit his wife from Jackson gate from Jackson Gate before he was killed.

While Joel had initially agreed to help Eugene to return to Jackson, he led the man away on a separate and insisted that this was the best way because the return was unsure. Joel Schoss Eugene and Ellie could hear it, but when they returned to Jackson with the man's body, Joel did not pass on the real story to Gail.

Joel told the therapist that Eugene had decided to end things to get them to safety, and after she had felt that she had been lied to over the fireflies for years, Ellie could not hold her tongue. The girl said Gail the truth that Eugene had asked to come back so that he could say goodbye to her, but Joel had killed him instead.

Now that the truth is no longer, it makes much more sense that Gail Joel would be the most hostile to the Eugene's choice to look away. Ultimately, it was the fracture in Ellie and Joel's relationship before they reconciled a little late.

As for those who are not familiar with the game The last of us part II, On which second season of the show Eugene is a patrol police officer who used to work with the fireflies and died of age.
