The ongoing crime in the improvised camp under the I-190 bridge is a problem

Rapid City, SD (Kota) -under the I -190 bridge, only foot from public paths and the Central High School, there is a hot spot for crime and danger.

“We see physical attacks, sexual assault, overdoses of drugs, we see violence every day,” said Ryan Marcks, head of mobile integrated health section at the Rapid City Fire Department.

Just last weekend, the police were sent to the camp in response to a stab in which the two victims had suffered serious injuries, and less than a month ago a man was murdered, together with countless other crimes over the years.

“The violence we see against people in these places has a connection in alcohol consumption,” said Marcks.

“If you surrender to the core of IT, we are dealing with a very big addiction problem. The attraction of the alcohol is stronger than attraction to maintain it and be in a safe place,” said Lt. Tim Doyle from the Rapid City Police Department.

“The city, the county, the journey, the hospital, Oyate, West River Mental Health, we have all of these groups together. When people get tired of this lifestyle because it is very dangerous and they no longer want to do this, we have the mechanism to pull it out,” said Doyle.

These camps are regularly tidied up by various city departments, so that the people living there remove their personal property.

“What we throw away is garbage. We give you the note, we give you the opportunity, we tell you that we do not surprise you. It is also a problem with public health, the condition of many of these blankets and sleeping bags and clothing is the things that are left behind that most people support.

Both believe that this is an ongoing topic that results from deeper problems in the community.
