Belgium asks the EU to raise the MDEP immunities in the Huawei scandal in the Huawei scandal

The Belgian authorities have asked the European Parliament to eliminate the immunities of a group of EU legislators in order to enable an investigation to investigate their alleged participation in a cash-to-influence scandal associated with the Chinese technology company Huawei.

The request confirmed by three EU officials has been two months since the allegations have been made. One official said five MPs were affected: three from the European People's Party of the European People's Officials, one of the socialists and one of the Central Renew Group, reports AZ, citing politico.

One of the officials said that the authorities also examined Parliament's staff.

The names of the MPs in question were not published, but will be announced on May 21 by Parliament President Roberta Metsola at the opening of a plenary session.

The legal committee of the parliament will then decide whether the immunities should be aligned in a process that can only take four weeks in sensitive cases if they are quickly pursued or up to a year for a year.

Daniel Attard, a Maltese socialist member, is part of the group, he said, he said on social media on Monday.

He said he was examined in the box in connection with the Huawei probe for participating in a football game in September, which Huawei has in the Anderlecht Football Stadium in Brussels.

“I did not realize that the invitation comes from a company or that it was a corporate box,” he said. “Since then, it has turned out that the invitation came from a person currently examined by the Belgian authorities and intended to talk to me about Huawei during the game.”

Attard said that after a subsequent meeting in parliament, he had not taken any measures with the company's representatives, which he explained, “had no further communication and had no measures in terms of Huawei or any matters in connection with the company”.
