DIIV Share video for the new song 'Return of Youth'

Diiv has returned with a new song, “Return of Youth”, the band's first new music since last year Frog in boiling water. It was recorded after the fires in Altadena, California, which led to Frontmann Zachary Cole Smith lost his home. “Breathe silent hope/ in an unknown world/ lead me on a way that/ innocent and stupid” leads, “he sings on the track, whose music video also examines the consequences. Try it down below.

In a long explanation, Smith said:

Hello

Diiv has a new song “Return of Youth” today. Sorry for the long statement

'Frog' was an album that concentrated our view of the world around us. It recorded a number of snapshots of our condition, in confusion, disgust and awe.

The writing time for this album was part of a nice time in my life when we prepared and waited that our first child was born. This beauty was cut with a profound existential dilemma: How can we bring a child into this world?

The common thread that ran through the fragmented world of the album was hope. We talked about it a bit. Real hope, false hope, something that makes your life meaning. It is an individual journey. I found it in parenting, but you can find it wherever you want.

“Return of Youth” was written before our son was born, a projection and zoomed in until the larger existential dilemmata were no longer framework. Where “Fender on the Freeway” found peace in the patterns of a gigantic macros, he finds it in a secular and simple microphone. I imagined to see myself through my child's eyes, a kind of rebirth that was laced by fear and uncertainty and summarizes beauty and serenity in the simplest places.

At the beginning of the year my family and I lost our home and everything we had the forest fires in Altadena, CA. We had prepared for the birth of our second son. We lived at home in the beautiful world that I imagined in this song, and this world was immediately gone.

When we took this song again to finally publish it, I couldn't help but hear the song differently. What is a home? Can you ever escape the outside world? Is hope just a deception? Is someone actually ready to be a parent? How can you bring a child into this world?

I found again that the big questions were irrelevant. You just live on. Life happens to the terms of life.

Anyway, make the song and the video what you want, it is only a snapshot, even if this time a more personal one.

Enjoy.

Cole
