La. Supreme Court grants Caddo Death Row inmate more time to submit a relief after the conviction

Shreveport, La. (KSLA) – On April 30, the Supreme Court of Louisiana said in a new statement that four weeks would not be enough time to receive a local death rein in the death department in order to apply for relief after the convention.

The 54-year-old Darrell Draughn was convicted by a jury in 2003 for the first degree.

The district court determined its date of execution for May 28, 2025. However, the Supreme Court of the State says that the Draughn team would not give enough time to put an application after the conviction. Instead, they believe that 180 days would be enough time. You are now asking the district court to set a new briefing time plan.

“The Supreme Court of Louisiana did nothing new here. You have only applied for a long-term law. In the words of the court, a 29-day period of less than the time that would be granted is to apply for a sentence to apply for a conviction,” said Zack Orjuela, Draughn's lawyer. “This decision respects the rights of both Mr. Draughn and the state and promotes careful review that our constitution requires in cases of death penalties.”

On Thursday, April 17, a hearing before the district court of Caddo for Draughn took place, who tried to take his punishment against his punishment after issued an arrest warrant against Draughn on March 24.

For the time being, his execution date was tackled at the end of May.

Draghn was convicted of murder's first degree after killing Lauretta White on April 10, 2000. A jury unanimously found him guilty of murder on July 1, 2003. Then he was convicted of being killed on May 17, 2004. On January 17, 2007, the Supreme Court of the State of Draughn confirmed conviction and punishment. Draghn's legal team applied for a review of the case before the Supreme Court of the United States, which was rejected on November 5, 2007.

More legal back and forth continued around 2011 to 2011. There has been no movement in this case for more than 17 years.

The state recently killed its first inmates for 15 years. Jessie Hoffman Jr. was carried out with nitrogen gas. The Attorney General of Louisiana, Liz Murrill, has urged to clarify the state's deficit against inmates in the death cell.

In the Caddo Parish there are several other inmates in the death cell. They are:
