Italy supported President Donald Trump's proposal that the Vatican could convey the talks about the negotiation of an armistice in Ukraine, while he seems to be interested in withdrawing from the process itself.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's office said that Italy was ready to “make contacts easier and to work on peace in Ukraine”, and it was “positive”. It was the Pope's willingness to have the talks in the Vatican.

In fact, there is still no fixed agreement on further discussions: Meeting last Friday between Russian and Ukrainian officials in Istanbul have brought additional demands from Moscow and not progress.

Pope Leo said last week that the Vatican was “always ready” to bring opponents together, and he “all efforts” to overcome peace.

But the holy chair says that the idea of conveying or even conveying conversations as to what Trump suggested was an option is more of hope for the moment than any specific plan.

If the direct commitment continues, Ukraine seems to be open to the concept of Vatican as a host.

Volodymyr Zelensky released on X on Tuesday that he had spoken to Giorgia Meloni, including “possible platforms for discussions with the Russians”.

The Italian prime minister had “cool ideas”, although he also raised Turkey and Switzerland as an alternative venue.

The Kremlin could prefer to stay in Turkey. It is about a process called “Istanbul Plus” and styles any conversations as a follow-up for the deal, which is originally discussed in Turkey shortly after the full invasion.

These terms, which also included Ukraine, which drastically reduced its own military, would now be the surrender for Kyiv.

But Russia has added more: The “Plus” part means the recognition of its annexation of four partially occupied regions of Ukraine and the Crimea.

The actual event location is of little importance for the Kremlin: All it wants is that the discussion about Vladimir Putin's terms goes.

The view of sensible progress is bluntly low.

But could the Vatican offer additional moral authority into the urge to compromise?

The Catholic Church has a story in history to convey conflicts, and it was already in conversations on free prisoners and the return of the Ukrainian children kidnapped by Russia.

However, the real input there is not clear, since others have fulfilled the same role.

On the other hand, the Vatican – in particular every involvement of the new Pope – would introduce a tone as a procedure.

His calm style could no longer be from Donald Trump's capitalized social media posts and his brutal public showdown with Zelensky in the Oval Office. And the attitude seems to have already worked miracles for the relationship of men.

At Pope Francis' funeral, they were caught deeply in conversation, their heads in St. Peter's Basilica.

The Vatican is proud of its diplomacy: that's why the Catholic Church sent the relationships with Moscow bombarding the relationships with Moscow to speak to the Kremlin. It had no effect.

President Trump had spontaneous talks with the leader of Ukraine at Pope Francis' funeral at St. Peter's Basilica

Pope Francis, like Donald Trump, always avoided identifying Russia as an attacker. Vatican sources say that this should keep the door for the Ajar dialog, even if it seemed hopeless.

But Francis annoyed the Ukrainians by pointing out that Russia had been “provoked” by NATO in her invasion. Then he agreed that Kyiv could be smart to “increase the white flag” and to arise.

For Kyiv, Pope Leo could be a preferred potential peace broker. He is in the recording when Bishop denounces the invasion of Russia as an imperialist war and convicted of crimes against humanity that Putin's troops committed.

It is unlikely that the Kremlin Face if the Vatican would ever organize talks.

“Putin can explain his position to the Pope.

“I don't think Pope Putin's understanding could influence in any way.”

At this point, Russia has no great pressure to give the reason: to punish all speech by Donald Trump, Putin for his unchellelabret, has turned to a conversation about the trade with Russia. Offer incentives, do not threaten sanctions.

It is true that Moscow wanted much more.

“You want Zelensky to be removed and that the US and the EU will hire military help, but in this case the USA was on the Ukraine side – from a Russian perspective,” says Tatiana Stanovaya.

So Russia is ready to play the long game – which does not compromise.

“If the Pope could help to put Ukraine under pressure, Putin would have no problem [with his involvement]”, she says.

That seems to be the real problem here. It runs far deeper than the question of whether the two sides of meze or antipasti eat between hypothetical rounds of fresh conversations.
