South Street First Stop for the community guard for neighborhood observation

Vicksburg, Miss. (VDN) – The citizens of the South Street Area quarter met with police and city officials in the South Street Shoppette yesterday in order to not only tackle the latest criminal activities in the region, but also to lay the basis for a local neighborhood observation program.

The meeting is part of the “Alderman Tj Mayfield” initiative and the police chief of Vicksburg, Penny Jones Community Viertel.

In yesterday's session, Chief Jones announced that two other cameras were installed to provide additional reporting on the area, but also encouraged individuals to get cameras for their houses.

“I know that many people are dependent on the police to build cameras, but many people have ring cameras,” said Chief Jones. “Your camera could just catch something that our cameras may not catch.”

Jones also explained that another purpose of the meeting was to tackle things that they may not be aware of.

“There can be some areas in South Street or in the Harrison Street in which there are things that we don't know,” she said. “And maybe you don't want to talk to us about it in front of the camera, but I'm definitely ready to listen to you. My office door is always open.”

The members of the community were also able to deal with the lack of speed limitation signs in the South Street and speak late at night with loud music.

Alderman Mayfield encouraged other districts to contact him in a statement after the event.

“I want Chief Penny Jones, the Vicksburg police department, and the residents of South Street, who took part in yesterday's discussion about crime and other neighborhood concerns, extend my gratitude,” he said. “A sensible change occurs when we work together as a community and receive our neighborhoods. This meeting marks the beginning of many such initiatives, and I invite you to contact myself when you are interested in planning a similar event in your neighborhood.”
