Drug transactions, shootings and robberies. A Milwaukee petrol station is temporarily closed after the city officials said that the crime has been out of control.

Crimes out of hand

What we know:

Wet signs, empty tap pumps and nobody in sight. This is because the city suspended the license of the north side petrol station.

So far, the police have been called to the BP in Vel R. Phillips and the W. Center Street more than 30 times in 2025. The crimes included a stab, physical struggles, noise complaints and a shootout.

During a hearing of the license committee in April, a police report listed further calls for the service from last year – including drug offers, shootings, lying around and expired food.

The police once said that several people with guns in rifle, which were strapped onto their bodies, went through the property for more than an hour.

What you say:

“The employee stated that they hadn't seen or heard anything, and they do not call the police, even though they were seen on video, with several armed topics inside and outside the business behind the counter,” said Guadalupe Velasquez from Milwauke's police department.

“Nobody is outside and I promise that I will take care of everything you said,” said Rana Anwar, the owner of the petrol station.

Anwar said he was working with the police to install additional lights and cameras. But the city guides said that was enough. On May 13, the Common Council exposed the gas station license for ten years – and did not extend the longer hourly license.
