WSAZ investigates | The crews contain chemical leak from the rail car

Greenup County, Ky. (WSAZ) – First aiders blocked part of US 23 in Greenup County on Tuesday when the crews worked to remove a leak from a rail car.

Public security of Greenup County said that a small amount of water -free ammonia on CSX real estate was leaked directly in front of the USA 23 in Flatwoods.

In this case, it was a liquid that – once released into the air – transformed into a gas or a steam substance.

“This morning, right at 6:30 a.m. or a little later, we had a report about a leak here in one of the cars that CSX had noticed, and it was a hard drive that was broken at the top of the car,” said Buford Hurley, director of Greenup's public security.

Hurley said the leak had happened while the rail car was inpatient on the tracks.

Tuesday was by no means a dry day.

Hurley said the pressure of the rain had the ability to keep a leak like the one who was experienced in more detail on Tuesday.

“If it is really bad and much more goes on when things are lower,” said Hurley.

When a situation like this happens, Hurley said that she had the potential to become a dangerous situation for those nearby.

“If you come into contact with it and inhale it, this can lead to problems with your bronchial tubes and also in your sinuses when they were so close and inhale the product,” said Hurley.

In order to protect everyone, the guidelines must be followed to determine which precautions must be taken.

“Can be dangerous if you have been there for a long time … and depending on how long you are dealing with this product. Therefore, precautionary measures are taken today to ensure that people who were even nearby were pulled away or protected, for this reason to ensure that they will not be in danger.”

According to public security officers of Greenup County, the crews ended the leak on Tuesday afternoon and the US 23 has reopened since then. The existing protection was also lifted for the residents.
