Bengaluru: The police have registered a first information report (FIR) against unknown persons after discovering a social media account, on which unwanted photos of women were published who travel without their knowledge or approval on the U -Bahn rail of Bengaluru.

The Instagram account, which went on the 'Bangalore Metro Chicks', won over 5,000 followers before the public counter reaction led to police interventions. On the page, pictures of female commuters were introduced, which were taken in U -Bahn trainers and on platform platforms. The identity of the person who runs the Instagram handle is unknown.

Pictures posted without consent

According to the police, there is no indication that the women shown in the photos were aware that they had photographed or granted permission that their pictures were published online. The matter has triggered considerable concerns about data protection violations in public spaces.

The problem came to light when a user marked the Instagram account on X and marked the Bengaluru City police and demanded quick measures.

The authorities answered by initiating their own investigation and then submitting a FIR. Then all content was removed from the Instagram page.

Public personalities require measures

Bangalore Central MP PC Mohan condemned the law and called it “an obvious violation of privacy and dignity” and asked the police to take immediate measures in order to take hold of those responsible.

In the meantime, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) also explained that it would contact the police to submit a formal complaint and to obtain legal steps against the individuals behind the account.
