Hungary -Aazerbaijan summit emphasizes the strategic energy alliance

The Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán underlined the critical importance of the Turkish nations – especially Azerbaijanese – for the energy safety of the Hungary and said that Hungarian households would pay two to three times more for energy without their support. When Orbán, in addition to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, praised the reliable partnership during a visit to Budapest, which enabled Hungary to diversify its energy sources in the middle of the ongoing energy and geopolitical challenges of the EU.

In Orbán, the first gas shipping from Azerbaijan arrived in Hungary last year. Aliyev continued in 2025. He attributed this cooperation with the enabled Hungarian energy prize, a heart of his domestic policy.

The Hungarian leader complained about dealing with the Ukraine conflict by the European Union and argued that the block escalated the war instead of containing it. He claimed that this was caused by Hungary over 20 billion euros in losses and damaged the basics of European economic growth. “We navigate through the European economy without a compass,” he warned, quoting exploding energy costs that have undermined competitiveness.

Orbán also referred to the closure of his gas pipeline in Ukraine as a serious disorder, which caused Hungary to pivot South and secure energy partnerships with Turkish countries. In this context, he praised Azerbaijans to enable Hungarian energy companies MVM and MOL to invest in Azerbaijanic oil and gas fields. These offers ensure hundreds of million cubic meters of gas and considerable oil volumes for Hungary every year.

In addition to fossil fuels, the two nations agreed to expand their cooperation in renewable energies. Aliyev announced ambitious plans for Azerbaijan to generate 6,000 megawatts of renewable energies in the next five years, so that it can save and export up to four billion cubic meters of natural gas.

Orbán and Aliyev also discussed more extensive geopolitical concerns. Both guides emphasized diplomacy about warfare, with Orbán Aliyev praised to secure a peace agreement with Armenia. The Azerbaijani president said that the Karabach conflict was solved in accordance with international law and the UN Charter, which claims that Azerbaijan had acted in his right to self-defense.

Aliyev continued to praise Hungary for maintaining an independent foreign policy, even within the EU framework – an attitude that he described as “heroic” and politically brave. He noticed the strategic orientation between Hungary and Azerbaijan, both neighbors to conflict zones and shared similar national security challenges.

The summit marked the first time that the organization of the Turkish states keeps a leadership in Hungary and underlines the in -depth relationships between Budapest and Turkish capitals.
