Big Bang Business competition at UC Davis is still highlighting young entrepreneurs on college

Davis-von injectable microchips for cattle up to ultrasound scanners that monitor the swelling of the brain, and devices to save a baby during the birth, UC Davis presented some of the state-of-the-art technologies that were invented by students of the Californian college students.

“We have companies that work in biology and engineering and human medicine as well as veterinary medicine and design,” said Joseph Dinunzio from the Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship of the University.

It is part of the annual Big Bang Business competition at the university, with more than 100,000 US dollars prize money for excavations.

“You will win a prize here, you will receive funds and you will assume and start your company,” said Dinunzio.

Alvin Zhang from Nexa Labs helped create a sensor in cows that captures health problems before the disease spreads through the herd.

“Why should you wait for something bad that happens before you take measures?” Said Zhang. “We want to take measures as soon as possible.”

He says one day it could even be used in humans.

“Our technology will be ready in July,” said Zhang.

“When a baby is born, you usually want it to be down to your face,” said Madeleine Mumford.

Mumford from Everest Medical created new technologies to save babies whose shoulders get stuck in the womb during birth.

“I have heard stories of doctors who break their fingers who try to carry out these maneuvers, and we try to enable them to do what they do, but surely,” said Mumford.

Many of these young entrepreneurs have already founded companies and have pending patents before they even have a degree.

“Zero doubts in my head will have more than one of these companies here in our region in Sacramento, all over the country and all over the world,” said Dinunzio.

This year's 25,000 dollar main prize went to Nexa Labs, the company that monitors cattle health. Six additional cash prizes were awarded for innovations in things such as education, energy and human health.
