What you can do to protect your family

Natural gas leaks can be difficult to see until it is too late.

The leaks can come from faulty gas devices such as an oven or stove or old and damaged pipes near their house.

If you believe that it cannot happen to you, think about it again. There is a natural gas explosion all over the country.

Pennsylvania has had 25 confirmed natural gas explosions since 2020, the third majority of every state in the nation. 38 people were injured and 19 people killed.

In the United States there are almost 300 natural gas explosions every year.

Security experts say that it is crucial for homeowners to install natural gas detectors to save lives and prevent tragedies.

“The frightening of natural gas problems is that sometimes they have a leak, a very small leak and don't even know,” said consumer expert David Vigiano.

We asked Vigiano about natural gas alarms for their home.

He recommends detectors that are equipped with 10-year-old batteries.

“You can assemble and leave it. You hardly notice it. It's small, not a connector,” he said.

Vigiano recommends that natural gas alarms should be installed in every room that has a gas device.

And since gas rises, alarms should be placed from the ceiling and 10 feet from the device within 12 inches.

After a massive explosion in a chocolate plant in West Reading, the NTSB published a report in which all 50 states, Puerto Rico and District of Columbia need to install natural gas alarms.

New York City and Maine have laws that prescribe the use of natural gas detectors in certain buildings and houses.

In April of this year, a law was introduced in the Senate of the state of Pennsylvania in which mandatory natural gas detectors in houses and companies, hotels, dormitories and daily providers were required.

If a natural gas alarm goes out in your house, Vigiano just says.

“Don't worry about switching off anything. If you touch devices, it could trigger something,” he said.

The alarms generally cost between 60 and 100 US dollars.
