Woman sentenced to 13 years behind bars for fatal DWI crash

A woman who drove drunk and caused a fatal crash learned her fate on Wednesday.

Albuquerque, NM – A woman who drove drunk and caused a fatal accident learned her fate on Wednesday.

The conviction after Adamaris Martinez began on Tuesday, but lasted on Wednesday morning. On Wednesday it was his turn to hit her case before the judge made the final decision.

Martinez admitted to getting drunk the wrong way to Paseo del Norte. She fell into a car that was driven by Colter Anderson. His passenger and fiance Jade Lucero were killed.

Martinez apologized for her actions on Wednesday.

“But I'm really, very sorry for me when I took a loved one with me,” said Adamaris Martinez.

On Wednesday, she and her family, friends, supporters and lawyers pushed for treatment rather than for prison.

“I know that I have hurt a lot of people and I don't know why God left me with life, but I have to go forward because I have two babies who just look up at me and I just can't stop,” said Martinez.

“We ask this court to postpone a final punishment until Ms. Martinez had time to undergo intensive supervision and intensive treatment, which is associated with the treatment courts available in this building,” said Deidre Ewing, a defender.

The prosecutors had the chance to refute the idea to refute that.

“We have heard that the accused is thoughtful and caring. People can be thoughtful and in a situation and not in others,” said Gonzales, prosecutor. “Your behavior that we judge here today is anything but thoughtful and caring.”

Then judge Matthew Chavez made his decision. He condemned Martinez for a maximum of 13 years in prison. She can have a free time for good time.

Martinez will work in two weeks to start the sentence.
