New Tsunami video gives insights, answers to prepare: Maui now

In cooperation with the Hawaii State Department of Education and Partners in the entire state, a video with the Hawaii State Department of Education and Partners was produced in 2025 Tsunami preparation video. Hawaii Governor Josh Green proclaimed April as Tsunami Awareness Month in Hawaii in 2024.

“The short video was developed to move all information families in one place that have to create scientifically based evacuation plans on the basis of their evacuation zone, regardless of whether they are at home, work or school,” said Dennis Hwang, faculty at Hawaii Sea Grant. “The video will also help families to prepare for other dangers, as it covers emergency communication apps at the emergency management agency for each district, the all-hazard warning system and the evacuation kits.”

This year marked 79 years since the deadly earthquake of the Aleuten of 1946 Aleuten, which produced Tsunami waves, which achieved more than 50 feet in areas across the state. The tsunami caused a widespread destruction with 158 deaths, 163 injuries, 488 buildings demolished and 936 other structures. Over time, 32 Tsunamis have influenced the state of Hawaii, which led to 293 deaths and $ 625 million.

“Tsunamis can occur anytime anytime because there are no tsunami season. The residents must always be ready to take measures,” said Laura Kong, director of the International Tsunami Information Center from NOAA. “We may only have minutes on site. The 1975 Kalapana earthquake produced a local tsunami that quickly flooded the campsite in Halapē, where a scout was camped and killed two.”

To prepare for future tsunamis, which can strike with very little warning and occur anywhere, the counties of kauaʻi, Maui, Honolulu and Hawaiʻi Island are working with the hawaiʻi Emergency Management Agency, NOAA's pacific tsunami Warning Center and International Tsunami Information Center, Pacific Tsunami Museum, Hawaiʻi Sea Grant and Federal and State Partners to Safeguard Lives and Property Through Coordined Warnings and Public News. The 2025 Hawaii Tsunami preparation video, the tsunami science, evacuation -kits, emergency communication with County apps and much more is a critical part of this news.

“When we pass from the end of Tsunami Awareness Month at the beginning of the hurricane season on June 1st, I encourage every resident of Hawaii and every visitor to observe this free resource that could possibly save their lives or the life of a family member,” added Green. “Every resident should also register for the corresponding emergency app -App -App -App -App.
