After the stars survived a strenuous seven-game series in the first round against the Colorado Avalanche, the stars in the second round voted with a six-game series victory against the Winnipeg Jets. The stars stole the home advantage in game 1 and then used the win of game 3, game 4 and game 6 in the American Airlines Center. Wing player Mikko Rantannen led the team with four goals (three templates) during the series, while the 23-year-old defender Thomas Harley led the team with four assists.

The path for Edmonton was surprisingly easy, with a 4-2 victory against the Los Angeles Kings in the first round and a dominant 4-1 win against the Vegas Golden Knights in the second. Although they prefer to be at home, the last series showed that Edmonton feels comfortable on the street because they won game 1, game 2 and game 5 on the street. The goalkeeper Stuart Skinner is in a hot run and has two consecutive shutout victories.

The stars and Oilers met three times during the regular season, with Dallas won twice.
