Indycar examines the independent governance after the Penske scandal

Indianapolis – Indycar examines the creation of an independent management committee that, according to the team Penske fraud scandal, is missing from the Roger Penske staff in front of the Indianapolis.

Penske has three car team Penske, Indycar, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indianapolis 500. On Wednesday, he fired his three best managers after two of their cars were illegal before the second round of Indy 500.

Since then, it has been shown that the Spec part team Penske had changed in the cars of the two-time defending champion Josef Newgarden, and Will Power had been done for some time. Both victory cars from Newgarden from its 2024 victory, which is exhibited in the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, and that he brought to the White House last month has the same modified part.

Competitive teams claim that they have photos of the Penske cars with the modifications of some time, and others claimed that they have informed the technical inspectors of Indycar that the Penske cars were not legal.

“We would like to make sure that we have an incumbent unit that cannot say for people that Roger Penske has an impact,” said Doug Boles, who was appointed President of Indycar in February, while he was already the title of President of Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Since Indycar caught the cars of Newgarden and power on Sunday – with the help of complaints from competing teams – the competitors claimed that the Penske cars had preferred treatment because they belong to Penske. They also questioned how it was not discovered on Saturday when Penske's three cars were locked in the race and are wondering whether the cars were legal at that time.

Penske has annoyed the look of favoritism since his purchase of Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 2020, since everyone who operates an arm of their organization is paid by Roger Penske. On Wednesday, the new Indycar President Doug Boles, who is also President of Speedway, said there is an evaluation to bring in external government in the future.

“We have worked very, very hard to create a company, an incumbent unit, and by the office I mean racing control and technical inspection and a unit that is completely away from everything that has to do with Penske Entertainment or Roger Penske or the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the IndyCar series,” said Boles.

Boles also said that one of the reasons why the cars were not caught with the illegal modification is that the change in the rear weaker had been made to be changed because it could impair its skills. Therefore, the part is not routinely checked because the IndyCar inspectors assume that teams want their cars to be safe.

“Our team and the technology do not look at them, and this is one of the parts that were only seen on Sunday,” said Boles. “Is that a miss? It is absolutely a miss.”

Nascar is ruled by the France family, which belongs to the series and most of his route. Racing control and the competition department are NASCAR employees. Nascar does not set up cars.

Formula 1 has an independent government in the FIA. F1 only has the commercial rights of the series, while the FIA has full control over how the series is ruled.

Boles and many teams said that the modification gave the Penske cars – which are already among the fastest in the field – a small advantage on the track.

“I heard it on Monday of team owners and others that it had no real effect on performance, and the reason why it has not been considered as much in recent years as we are investigating the things we know that they have a performance,” said Boles. “I am not an excuse that a rule was violated. In fact, you should see in the decision that we made on Monday that we took you seriously. It is a safety element.”
