The Pitt County's office starts the Crime Gun Intelligence Center with federal cinema

The Sheriff office in Pitt County started a new center for the federal government of 700,000 US dollars thanks to a federal grant in September 2023. This initiative in cooperation with the office for alcohol, tobacco, firearms and explosives (ATF) aims to rationalize the analysis of weapons and balls.

Lieutenant Wallace Moore from Pitt County's office said: “The support was generated by a large number of agencies … The office of the DA, Greenville PD, ATF … Most agencies in our district support the program.”

The subsidy has financed state -of -the -art software and devices associated with the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN), a nationwide platform for technology and information exchange. Moore said: “It is a technological and information exchange platform that is nationwide.”

The new equipment includes a ballistics chamber in which the investigators fire weapons and add the housing into the database. According to evidence, this process can match within hours and possibly link cases or crimes. Not only is it expected to solve existing crimes, but also future, especially those who involve stolen weapons.

The PITT County's office will compete with the Nibin network several local law enforcement authorities. Previously, the Jacksonville police received a scholarship to access the network and exchange information with New Bern Police. The database currently contains over 5 million ballistic evidence nationwide.
