The local author Patrick Baird starts his new crime novel of the Prohibition period. Van Hokes capersThis weekend with a book on May 24th, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Otherworlds Books and more, 41 N. 3rd Ave. in Sturgeon Bay.

Van Hokes capers Takes place in Door County from 1929 to 1931. Thumper van Hoke and his partner Granville “Duke” Dukenfield try plans for rum-running, Moonshine and Brewing Wildcat beer. All you have to do to be successful is to outsmart the local sheriff, the Feds and the Chicago Mob. A lustful homage to Wisconsin's love affair with intoxicating spirits, Van Hokes capers is a great story in history, alcohol and humor.

Baird is the author of eight novels, most recently Darkness at the door of deathA local bestseller in 2024. He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, who has lived in Door County since 2020.
