Two employees of the Israeli embassy shot and killed in Washington, say officials, say officials

Two young Israeli embassy helpers were shot by a man on Wednesday evening before an event in the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington who, according to law enforcement officers, screamed Pro-Palestinian slogans.

The shootout nearby occurred shortly after 9 p.m. on an inner city street in front of an event, which was organized by the American Jewish Committee in the heart of the official Washington behind the FBI field office of the FBI and near the Capitol, the Ministry of Justice and the FBI headquarters.

Pamela A. Smith, the chief of the Metropolitan Police Department, said reporters at a press conference on the night in the police chief that the man called “Free, Free Palestine” after his detention. He also informed the police about the location of a weapon.

Yechiel Head, the Israeli ambassador, told reporters at a press conference that the two people killed were a young couple who should be engaged. “The young man bought a ring this week to suggest his girlfriend in Jerusalem next week,” he said and called her a “nice couple”.

“I will say the following: We are a resilient people,” he added. “People in Israel are resilient people and the people in the United States of America are resilient people.”

The suspect, which was identified as Elias Rodriguez (30) from Chicago, was arrested shortly after the shootings, the law enforcement officers said. The names of the victims were not published immediately.
