According to the injury IDF engineering student, student develops life-saving systems

Yaakov, a 22-year-old from Jerusalem, joined in November 2023 for a specialized officer training program in the Panzer Corps. About a year ago, however, he was injured during his training and was relieved by the army.

“I fought through medical committees to continue to serve,” he said. This determination led him to study a new way as a cadet who studied mechanical engineering at Ariel University.

Despite his excitement about this new direction, Yaakov was difficult to watch his friends while he was safe at the university. “You risk your life while I am protected on campus. I was looking for ways that I could now also contribute as a student.”

On this occasion, Yaakov developed two innovative projects together with his classmates Leonid Kupriyan and Julia Karol. These projects rely on his personal experiences with tanks, his knowledge of safety events in which his friends are involved during the war and his own challenges after his injury.

“My goal is to save the life of soldiers, including my friends. I want to create safer tanks and prevent unnecessary deaths,” he said.

The first system on which the team works includes sensors that are supposed to prevent injuries to the tank crews during the tower rotation. “I personally remember the fear of being injured in the tank during the movement. It can be a life -threatening moment, and our development will provide the soldiers an alarm so that they can prepare and protect themselves,” said Yaakov.

The second system is intended to insulate tank ammunition. At the beginning of this month, the team had the opportunity to present this project at a hackathon organized by the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at Ariel University.

“It is exciting and gratifying to see the interest of senior academics, including the University of CEO, on our project,” said Yaakov proudly.

“Our developments are not only theoretical, they emerged from a real need in this area. I know that they can save lives, and I hope we will reach the moment when these systems are integrated into IDF armored and their purpose to protect armored soldiers.”
