DSO and Crimson Key Society Debüt Debüt Housing Day Video Awards Ceremony 'The Johnnies' | News

On Wednesday, Currier House took the People's Choice Award at the First Housing Day Video Awards Ceremony with the name “The Johnnies”, which contained a reception and stand-up comedy in the Gutman Conference Center of the Graduate School of Education.

The event, which was organized by the dean of the student office in cooperation with the Crimson Key Society, was given six awards and participated by representatives of all houses, Crimson Key members and DSO administrators, including the dean of the students Thomas G. Dunne.

Every March at Housing Day, the new students wake up the loud vocals of the high school students who prepare for storming their dormitories and indicate which house will call the first semester for the rest of their time in Harvard.

In the expectation of this event, Mather House uploaded the first “Housing Day Video” on YouTube in 2009. The tradition spread to all houses, but exploded in 2019 when Adams House created a music video video, which became viral with more than 87,000 calls.

Of the six awards at the event on Wednesday, five winners were selected by a committee of seven judges who consisted of Harvard administrators and “external members”, said Sabrina Debrosse, DSO director for digital strategy and communication.

The awards included the video of the year that Lowell House took home, the best processing and visual efforts as well as the best choreography, both on Leverett, the best texts that Winthrop won, and most House Pride that went to Cabot.

The People's Choice Award won the Currier was the only category that was open to the public vote. The Google form for the selection was sent in a weekly Harvard College newsletter and did not pursue the e -mails of the voters or prevent several submissions.

Sasha, “Community Engagement Dog” at Harvard University Police Department, took part in the event and delivered the envelope, which contained the winner for each category, to the moderators.

The winners from every house kept short speeches and accepted their awards and received an etched glass prophy with the name of their profit category.

Both Dunne and Crimson Key Historian Ryan F. Irving '27, who plans all social events in the group, described the organization of the award ceremony as cooperation.

“The videos on the day of the apartment are such a large part of community life, and we feel like we really bring people together,” said Irving. “We put it together as a joint effort.”

“We actually crossed the road from the Smith Campus Center and I said:” Hey, I have a crazy idea. Do you think people would deal with it? “Then we involved a few more people,” said Dunne in an interview after the event. “So we decided to do it.”

Crimson Key member and event meeting Carly R. Brail '26 said that they expect the Johnnies to become more prominent in the coming years.

“You are approaching a much greater tradition and I am very happy that he is here,” said Brail about Dunne.

“I think this will improve competitiveness in real Harvard fashion,” said Dunne. “I look forward to continuing to invest in the day of the apartment as one of the best traditions on every college campus all over the country.”
