Google Beam 3D video conferences could change your work calls forever

After around four years of only very few obvious developments, Google confirmed that his project starline is still progressing in 2025 at his annual developer conference I/O.

This time the concept revolves around the new and public name of Beam for lifelike video calls that use extended hardware, computer vision and machine learning to create 3D video conference experiences without glasses or headsets.

Instead of collecting data from ten cameras (six is still used), Beam uses a state-of-the-art AI volumetric video model to convert 2D video into a realistic 3D feed.

In addition to six cameras, Google has confirmed that Beam uses a light field display for real depth and a feeling of dimension. The AI merges the six video streams, follows head movements and renders the video call at 60 fps. Beam can also support natural eye contact and subtle expression detection to make the video call call hyperistic.

Since it is a flagship video conference tool, it should not be a surprise that this holographic 3D platform receives the same real-time language translation, which fulfills, whereby the system is able to maintain language, sound and facial expressions for natural multilingual communication.

However, there is a big catch and it is not the price (which is not confirmed). It is the case that the general consumers cannot experience the technology if they work for one of Google's Enterprise customers. Customers will be selected in the course of this year, whereby the first HP hardware devices will be presented at InfoComm next month.

For the context, the project ghost from Logitech, a similar pod-based system, costs around $ 15,000 to $ 20,000 per stood with a somewhat less advanced 2D system.

Google confirmed that Deloitte, Salesforce, Citadel, Nec, Hackensack Meridian Health, Duolingo and Recruit have already registered their interest in Beam.
