Barcelona is the funniest team in the world – because they are faulty

“I am very proud of the performance that my squad got up, because tonight we confronted one of the most offensive and beautiful teams in the world.”

These were the words of the Inter Milan Manager Simone Inzaghi after the first leg of an exciting bond in the semi-finals of the Champions League. Six goals, an endless carousel of highlights and probably the best game in competition this season.

Among all the things we learned on Wednesday evening, there was a certainty that Barcelona is the most entertaining team in the world – which does not mean the best.

The way in which Lamine Yamal was wearing his team in a stunning exhibition, she scored three goals against a team this season only four in 12 games in the Champions League, and the mentality that the squad came back in a two-goal deficit, and then 3-2 were a pleasure to witness. But all of this happened because the Catalans were imperfect as they went through the whole season.

Since Hansi Flick took responsibility last summer, Barca's approach has been exciting in games, but self -destructive. They are defined by an extremely high line of defense, which they combine with a relentless counter press. Flick's system was generally well adapted in the season, and the offensive firepower of his squad brought them where they are – within sight of a remarkable Treble by La Liga, Champions League and Copa del Rey (which they won in a similarly ridiculous way last weekend).

But her football is a high-wire act, and it feels as if every game has only two potential results in one game: Barcelona suffocates her opponent and destroys her, or as soon as a team slides through her first printing line, she finds vulnerable defense to use it.

That was perfectly exposed to the Inter game. According to UEFA, Barca registered 14 shots against Inter. They scored three goals and scored the woodwork twice. In the meantime, Inter had seven shots, three of which are at the destination that ended up in the goal and had a fourth because Henrikh Mkhitaryan's toe was somehow in an advanced position.

This is the price that the flick has to pay to play like Barca. The most extreme example is probably Yamal, an early talent that makes the difference like no one to end. However, this attacking edition is compensated for by the knowledge that it will be less active in outside the ball and defense.

Frenkie de Jong is similar. He is a luxury of a holding middle field player, a talented technician who does not lose a ball, can split pressing lines that drive the ball and is in the best form of his Barca career. As soon as he is not in possession, you will see that he has difficulty feeling the gaps in defense, to be as aggressive for duels as it should be and the team more susceptible.

“We will not withdraw our plan-I would actually say the opposite,” said a source in Barcelona's backroom employee who prefers to remain anonymous to protect their position in building the inter game. “We will double our trust in the approach we have. We will continue to play as they have seen.”

Inter manager Simone Inzaghi made himself the same line after the game with Italian channels. “Barcelona's strategy is very risky, but pays off,” he said. “You have scored over 150 goals, already won two titles and are still fighting for two more.”

What happened in the first leg of the semi -finals of the Champions League is not a news from Barcelona. After the fascinating Copa del Rey final, they arrived at the game against Real Madrid on Saturday when they won 3-2 with a comeback.

A week earlier, they came back from 3-1 against Celta de Vigo to win another victory in La Liga. In the last five games that Barca played in all competitions, they have admitted 11 goals.

However, the latest tendency could give an explanation: Barca players are exhausted and some injured.

Robert Lewandowski and Alejandro Balde were not available for the first leg, with the backups Ferran Torres and Gerard Martin replaced them. Now it is very likely that Jules Kounde will miss the second leg by a thigh injury against Inter. In the meantime, Pedri, probably the most influential player, has spent so long on the field this season that he can complete 90 minutes.

“It's not easy if you play every three days, to train things as you want,” said Flick during his media tasks after the game. “This is the situation. Kound's injury is also about playing every three days. It happens.”

Everything comes at a time when Barca faces some of the best squads in Europe when they follow the heights. But the changing room is not worried.

“It is good to see what we do because we like to play football, control the game and score goals,” said de Jong after the game. “We take a few risks with it, but I think we also get a lot of good things, so we will continue to have the same mentality.”

“We wanted more,” added Yamal. “I think we could have won the game. I am happy to help the team, but I always want to win and that's why I ended the game a bit bitterly. But we'll go again how we did it today. We concentrate on the second leg and we will go straight to them.”

Stake: the next Tuesday, the determination in Milan promises a must.
