Al Capones clock and more at June New York Watch Auctions

Despite a slight turnover of luxury watches in retail and the threat of tariffs in Swiss imports to the USA, the auction sales with several high -quality parts and some surprises are humming in New York in early June. The highlights include a pocket watch by Al Capone at Sotheby's, a Rolex Daytona with a racing strain in Phillips and a Patek Philippe from 1989, which was once the most complicated clock of the world of Christie. The New York sales are planned for June 9 at Christie's, June 10 at Sotheby's and from June 7th to June 8th.

Sotheby's places a selection of rare Patek Philippe watches in the spotlight, including several minutes of repeater, the global head of the watches Geoff Hess described as “the strongest group of trophy spateks I have ever seen in a single sale”. This includes patek's first combined world/minute repeater, ref. 5531r-012 (est. 550,000 to $ 1.1 million); A double signed (by Gübelin) women's repeater ref. 2424/1 (est. 1,250,000 to $ 2,500,000); And a rare 1914 pocket watch repeater, which was twice signed by Tiffany.

If you plan to take part in the preliminary views, Sotheby's has created a fascinating immersive exhibition concept called Repeater's Studio around the Repeater Patek Philippe Minute. Visitors get headphones to listen to the different bell play of every repeater that is transformed together into a curated musical arrangement. Also at Sotheby's, they do not miss the Diamond and Platinum Patek Philippe Pocket Watch, who once belonged to Gangster Al Capone. The case that was manufactured after leaving Patek is set with 90 diamonds that exploit its initials “AC”. If this watch could speak, it would undoubtedly have a few stories to tell. ($ 80,000 to $ 160,000).

Phillips sells a Rolex Daytona Ref. 6265, known as “Big Red” because of the Red Daytona logo, once the French Formula 1 champion driver Jean-Pierre Jabouille. It can be “dying” with the threatening words (est. $ 50,000 to $ 100,000). Another Phillips highlight is a yellow gold version of Patek Philippe's most famous reference, which has been in the same collection for almost 40 years and is estimated for $ 400,000 to $ 800,000. According to Phillips, “his owner always kept it in a moisturized vault after he had never worn it since he was auctioned in 1989.” Hopefully it will be acquired by someone who wears it.

The highlight of Christie's sale is also a Patek Philippe, this a Rosa Golddef. 3974R, that was the most complicated wristwatch in the world when it was introduced in 1989 to celebrate the 150 of the brandTH Anniversary. Of the 160 pieces produced, only about 20 were produced in pink gold. Rebecca Ross, VP watches to Christie's New York, calls it “one of the most important watches that have ever been made in series by Patek Philippe and means rarity, complexity and performance”. (Est. $ 650,000 $ 1,350,000).

A rare pleasure among remarkable independent watchmakers is also offered at Christie's: A Geubel Forsey Double Tourbillon 30º Edition Historique. It was one of the early watches from the duo that led the concept of the inclined tourbillon Pionier. It is made around 2020 and applies under the 11 pieces that were made due to its platinum housing and bears the signature of both watchmakers Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey. (Est. $ 120,000 $ 220,000).
