Weapon, drug-related crimes in Iowa City, shoplifting increases, according to 2024 ICPD data

According to the new data published by the Iowa City police department, the shootings, rounds are fired, the people are hit and confiscated weapons.

ICPD published its crime data in 2024 on Thursday, and the city council is to address the report at its upcoming meeting on June 3.

Iowa City PD says that gun violence is one of its “highest priorities”. In 2024 there was a gun murder: Christine Blount was shot on December 30, 2024 in the 600 block of the South Dodge Street. In this case, no suspect was arrested.

This is an increase compared to 2023, when no one was killed by shots. ICPD contains no suicide in connection with weapons, try or accidental discharges in the data of the weapons violence.

According to the Iowa City police, there were seven documented shootings in 2024, a 50% decline compared to 2023. They also confiscated 53 weapons, two of which were “ghost ducts” or weapons that were built at home without serial numbers.

Most recorded crimes

The simple attack was the crime in Iowa City the most last year. Around 776 arrests were made due to the crime in 2024. This is followed by drug injuries (367) and intimidation (259).

The report states that Iowa City and Johnson County have several investments in distraction efforts such as “The Guidelink Center, the intervention program for violence in the community and the increasing public relations work of the ICPD in communities that suffer from homelessness, drug abuse problems and mental health crisis. The police say that the decline could come from these services.

In 2023, 276 cases of violence were used in fewer service calls (62,315).
