The fraudster scandal at Indy affects the race weekend in historical times.

A large black cloud hangs on the largest race weekend over the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and it is not just the possibility of thunderstorms in the region. A scandal with the legendary Penske racing team threatens to overshadow the Indy 500.

What is the Indy 500 fraud scandal about?

The 109th run of the famous race is planned for Sunday, May 25th, at 12.45 p.m. The President of Indy, Doug Boles, has fulfilled damage control since the scandal was terminated and said that the timing could not be worse.

“I would much rather talk about how great the Indianapolis 500 is,” said Boles. “And how our ticket sales are and how we have had our biggest qualified weekend in relation to participation since 2016.”

Two of the fastest cars in the field, one of two defending champions Josef Newgarden and the other from the former winner Will Power, will start on Sunday after qualifying on the back of the pack. It is the second major violation for the Penske team in two years. Roger Penske, the sport of sport, released his management team on Wednesday, May 21st. He told Fox Sports that his organization let everyone down.

“People came to me and said they should be a leader of this sport, and here they have these two situations, and I think I didn't help the integrity of sport,” said Penske. “In my view, I have to take over the team owners together with the Penske Entertainment Leadership and regain this credibility.”

Newgarden wants to write history by being the first driver to win three consecutive Indy 500s. During the “Carb Day” training on Friday, May 23, he turned into the fastest round at a speed of 225.687 miles.

What do other drivers say about the violations?

Since 1972, cars have won 20 Indy 500 races and made his team the most successful in sports. He not only has the racing team that was caught, but also the entire Indy Car series and the famous race track. Other drivers did not see the scandal this week as a deliberate fraud by Penske's team, but many say that better oversight is required.

Drive the legend Helio Castoneves, the three of his four Indy 500 trophies won in a car in Penske-ownership, agreed with the punishments, but did not believe that the violations had given new garden or an advantage.

“I know how Roger works. He wants to make everything beautiful, perfect, shiny,” said Castoneves. “I think it was again a mistake in touching this area that you don't touch. So I think what the series does is right. But it doesn't need something like that to go quickly.”

What is the other big story this weekend?

Kyle Larson hopes for high speeds and many miles on Sunday. He tries to only become the second driver in history, completed the “The Double”, which means that he is driving 500 in the Indy and then on a private plane to Charlotte, NC, jumping in Nascars Coca-Cola 600 in Nascar later that night.

“The Double” has been tried by five different drivers in the past 30 years, also by Larson in 2024. Tony Stewart was the only one who completed all 1,100 miles in 2001. The matter for Larson was more difficult for Larson, his best car fell during the Indy training on May 16 and has to start on Sunday in the middle of the pack.

“I think if you only make a normal kind of race goods, do good restarts and pit stops and things, you can work forward without having to work too hard,” said Larsen. “So hopefully I and our team can do a good job on Sunday and just pour it away.”

Last year, an almost 3-hour rain delay on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Larson prevented him from reaching Charlotte in time in the 600 race. The forecast for Sunday requires some showers and possible thunderstorms in Indianapolis, so he may need a little luck to make it.
