Mind guard for the Dallas primary student who was killed in a truck

A Dallas ISD community comes together one day after a heartbreaking loss.

A vigil took place outside of the Botello primary school on Friday evening to honor a 9-year-old student who died after he had driven home from school on Thursday.

“This is definitely a dark summer that everyone goes into – it definitely gives them awareness,” said parents Cynthia Rocha, whose children attend school.

Rocha organized the vigil to honor Jose Garcia Ledesma, with his mother being present.

“It is difficult. As a mother, you can't help but put yourself in your shoes,” said Rocha. “Very, very heartbreaking.”

The child was only killed by school on Thursday afternoon a few steps from school.

He was hit by a truck when he went with his family. His mother, sister and another child were also injured.

The Dallas police said that the driver, an older man, stayed at the scene and cooperated. So far, no fees have been submitted.

“It was an overwhelming feeling of loss, both for the community and the school,” said teacher Yuri Ellet. “Our school is an inviting beacon for everyone who lives in this area.”

Ellet said Jose was not one of his students, but he always enjoyed seeing him in the halls.

“He was always happy – little child, a little child,” said Ellet. “A small child is always full of joy and yesterday was our field day.”

A monument is growing outside of school, and mourning consultants were on campus on Friday to help the students process the tragedy. The employees ensured that the students safely crossed the street before and after class.
