US officials visit Alcatraz in the middle of Trump's plan to reopen the island of prison San Francisco

Federal prison officers visited Alcatraz last week after Donald Trump's announcement at the beginning of this month with plans for the reconstruction and reopening of the notorious island prison, which has been closed for over 60 years, rebuilt and reopened.

David Smith, the superintendent of the national recreation area GGnra Ggnra (Ggnra), told the San Francisco Chronicle that officials from the Federal Bureau of Prisons are planning to return for further structural reviews.

“They were out here. They will come out again to assess the structure,” Smith told the news agency.

The island system has been closed since 1963 when the then At the time of the Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy ordered their switch -off in relation to high operating costs, limited space and several attempts to escape.

BOP director William Marshall told Fox News that engineering teams have already monitored the website. “We now have technical teams that make some reviews and I'm really happy about the opportunities and opportunities,” he said.

In the past few months, the US government has reopened at least five previously closed detention centers and prisons.

Although the legislator in California has dismissed Alcatraz's proposal as a “distraction” and not as a serious plan, the Trump government works actively with the help of private prison companies – to reopen other facilities, some of which are already in operation again.

Smith said that he was skeptical of the reopening of Alcatraz and pointed out the great financial investments and legal challenges that would require it.

He said it was “just not well equipped” for the prison's office.

But Marshall called the proposal “exciting” and feasible. He suggested that modern, light materials could solve some of the island's logistical challenges.

“If you think of Alcatraz, think of Fenway Park, Wrigley Field, Lambeau Field, these types of facilities … You only get a feeling about Alcatraz if you think of these historical venues,” Marshall told Fox News with Lara Trump, Trump's daughter -in -law.

“And so, yes, we absolutely think that we can do it.”

In the meantime, the Ggnra Seismische retrofit projects are carried out on the island, including the reinforcement of the pier and the stabilization of the aging cell house, to prevent further deterioration.
