Indy 500 2025 News | Team Penske scandal, qualification, start list, Will Power, Scott McLaughlin

Before the 109th run of the Indianapolis 500, there was so much drama that Kyle Larson's attempt to complete the Nascar doubles of 1770 km did not even complete the top attention devices.

Roger Penske's credibility was tested this week and he fired the three leading managers of his IndyCar team because the cars of the two-time defending racing winner Josef Newgarden and Australian Will Power were missing the inspection.

The team had changed a technical security part – something that Indycar keeps not to offer a competitive advantage – and forced Penske to act.

The second big violation in a little more than a year in the Penske team put the captain's reputation.

He has his team, but also Indycar, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indy 500-the most important races in the world for him and one that the 88-year-old Penske won 20 times.

“We not only had an organizational failure once, but twice. It hurts my stomach,” said Penske.

“There is a certain credibility that you have to have. We let people down. We will continue and our goal is to win the race.”

The grandstands have been sold out for the first time since 2016, and the Indy 500 will be a few kilometers away hours before the start of play with the three -way conference in Indiana Pacers.

The Speedway expects 350,000 people to take part.

“The disadvantage is that most of the conversation that goes into our biggest race of the year”, Scott Dixon, winner of the Indy 500 from 2008 from New Zealand, about the Penske scandal.

“There are so many cool stories.”

The first Israeli driver will lead the field

Robert Shwartzman becomes the first Israeli driver in the 33-car field when he was the first rookie pole winner to lead it to the green since 1983.

The 25-year-old is both Russian and Israeli, even though he drives under the Israeli flag.

He won the Pole with Italian team Prema Racing, a dominant European organization that expanded to Indycar this season.

Shwartzman has never driven an oval before and will start with the two -time winner Takuma Sato and Pato O'Ward, who lost to Newgarden against Newgarden last year.

Shwartzman was hugged by the crowd in Indianapolis.

“It has been since the moment I felt that we were quick and people notice that we were actually not bad, we are quite competitive, it started to collect this level of people, cheer, cheer, cheer,” said Shwartzman.

“When we took the bar, it is incredible to roar, how loud it is. It was a long time ago since I heard that.”

What about the Penske cars?

The three Team Penske cars did not take part in the last day of the qualification.

New Zealand's Scott McLaughlin fell earlier that day before Newgarden and power were disqualified, and his car had the illegally changed piece about it.

McLaughlin begins the 10th place and is motivated to help Penske repaired the team picture.

Newgarden, who will be the first driver in three consecutive years, who wins Indy, will start 32nd place after the punishments and power at the last place.

No driver has ever won from the last row, but Newgarden believes that this can be done. The field will not be surprised.

“The Penskes are damn rockets,” said O'Ward.

“It will be fun to move Josef through traffic.”

O'Ward's takeover

The Mexican driver has become Indycars Superstar, and he broke twice with second place in Indy.

O'Ward's starting position from O'Ward is the best of his career and the dynamics for a victory.

Its energy vibrates on the Speedway, where his purchase of a bomber jacket in the Infield-Warenzelt sold out the article online and the Homesfeld of Indianapolis fire promoted to a national level.

There were only five jackets, all Size XL that are still available on Saturday (AEST).

O'Ward also brought the Indiana Dairy Association to bring a cow to Speedway on Friday so that he could milk it – a rookie tradition on the Indy 500, which he missed because his first appearance was during the pandemic.

“We need more people like Pato in Nascar,” said Larson, his Arrow McLaren teammate at Indy.

Hole in the curriculum vitae

Alex Palou won four of the first five Indycar races this season, but flew under the radar this month.

The Spaniard starts sixth place.

His best finish is the second and he has been in the top nine in the past four years.

Palou is the two-time incumbent IndyCar champion and has three titles in the past four years.

He admitted that if he never wins the Indy 500, his career would not be complete – and the winner of 14 breeds still has to win against an oval.

“In this race they don't think of the championship at all,” said Palou.

“A third place is not good enough. A second place is not good enough. Only then only counts.”

Larson makes 'the double'

The Nascar star tries to complete the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 in North Carolina on Monday (AEST), a performance that he had completed last year for rain.

Larson brought a long delay in Indianapolis late to Charlotte Motor Speedway, and the race was not only at the time when he arrived, but was also stopped by rain.

He didn't do a single round of the NASCAR leg.

He did not show the same speed at Indy as a year ago and, as teammates with O'Ward, dulled part of the ramp light on him.

Larson will make the Nascar race priority.

“I have the feeling that I get a lot of attention in everything I do and breed, and I don't really like it because I have the feeling that it takes away the spotlight of others,” said Larson.

“This year was better because I felt like I flew under the radar. I felt crazy last year. It was more normal and I like it.”
